Meeting Future Environmental Challenges Onshore

Published 04 May 2016 | By Aquateam COWI

Biological wastewater treatment processes are well-known to the oiland gas-refining industry. The activated sludge biological water treatment process is used in conjunction with plate separators and chemical/physical processes such as coagulation/flocculation and flotation for wastewater treatment in refineries worldwide. Increasing oil prices and enhanced oil recovery techniques, including oil production in mature fields with high volumes of water produced, at the same time as the tightening of environmental regulations in many areas, not only bring challenges offshore in terms of the management of produced water for the upstream oil industry, but also lead the downstream industry into a new arena with respect to water and waste management.
